Analysis: Australian intelligence now has its work cut out
By Diana Magnay, international correspondent

In August this year, Benjamin Netanyahu sent a furious letter to Anthony Albanese, his Australian counterpart, lashing out at his country’s recognition of the state of Palestine at the UN, which he said served to intensify antisemitism in Australia.

“Antisemitism is a cancer that spreads when leaders are silent. You must replace weakness with action,” he said at the time.

One week later, Albanese suspended ties with Iran and expelled the Iranian ambassador after Australian intelligence services concluded that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were ultimately behind two antisemitic arson attacks the previous year, one at a cafe in Sydney and the other at a synagogue in Melbourne.

What correlation there may have been between Netanyahu’s criticisms and Albanese’s action against the Iranian regime is unclear.

Australia’s national security agency (ASIO) will have taken months to conduct its investigation.

For Israel’s leaders though, who say they warned Australia repeatedly of the threat posed by antisemitism, the government’s efforts to protect the Jewish community have not been enough.

As the ASIO investigates an act of antisemitic terror on a much larger scale, it will be looking to see whether Iran played a hand in this too – through a “complex web of proxies”, which is how the intelligence chief described their involvement back in August.

We won’t know those results for some time.

The agency, once again, has its work cut out.

King and Queen ‘appalled and saddened by dreadful antisemitic terrorist attack’
The King has just issued a statement following the terror attack on the Hanukah celebration on Bondi beach in Sydney, Australia.

Here is his message to Australians in full:

“My wife and I are appalled and saddened by the most dreadful antisemitic terrorist attack on Jewish people attending the Chanukah celebration at Bondi Beach.

“Our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected so dreadfully, including the police officers who were injured while protecting members of their community. We commend the police, emergency services and members of the public whose heroic actions no doubt prevented even greater horror and tragedy.

“In times of hurt, Australians always rally together in unity and resolve. I know that the spirit of community and love that shines so brightly in Australia – and the light at the heart of the Chanukah Festival – will always triumph over the darkness of such evil.”

The King is also the head of state of Australia.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have also just issued a statement on social media.

‘I could see she was bleeding’: Shooting witnesses on how attack unfolded
Here’s a summary of some of the eyewitness testimonies from the attack in Sydney.

‘I freaked out and ran away’

Lachlan Moran, 32, from Melbourne, was waiting for his family when he heard gunshots.

He says he dropped the beer he was holding for his brother and ran.

“You heard a few pops, and I freaked out and ran away… I started sprinting. I just had that intuition. I sprinted as quickly as I could.”

Moran says the shooting continued on and off for about five minutes.

‘The gun sounded so loud’

Grace, 30, also from Melbourne, and her partner Joel Sargent, 30, were in their hotel room when they heard a banging noise.

They looked outside to see people running and hiding.

She says:

“People were screaming, and the gun sounded so loud. It was constant; it would have been over 50 [shots], easily.”

‘I could see she was bleeding’

Richard Hasten attended the Hanukkah by the Sea event.

He tells ABC his grandson was playing at the petting zoo and “everything was fine” before he heard shooting.

He tells the Australian outlet:

“I took cover. I was laying down and a woman was right in front of me and I could see she was bleeding right in front of me … so I took my shirt off to stop the bleeding.”

He says he thinks the bullet may have grazed her skull, but she is now “fine”.

‘We saw thousands of people just running’

Zac Bailey tells 9 News:

“We just heard what sounded like fireworks. The beach was absolutely packed. And then there were a lot of fireworks going off. Then suddenly we saw thousands of people just running this way. So we all just went inside, holed up in the toilets.”

Friend says fellow rabbi killed in terror attack – as he appeals for Jews to light candles
Our correspondent in Sydney, Nicole Johnston, spoke a short while ago to Rabbi Levi Wolff of Central Synagogue Sydney, who rushed to the scene when he was told about the shooting.

He told her: “We are on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, known as the Festival of Lights, and there was about to be a public menorah lighting for the first night of the Jewish holiday.

“And the gunmen were just shooting at those who were there present for the menorah lighting.”

Rabbi Wolff goes on to say that his colleague and friend, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, was killed in the terror attack.

He was “full of light, full of unbelievable energy”, and “gave so much of himself to this very community”.

“On the Festival of Light, his light was unfortunately snuffed out,” Rabbi Wolff said.

He went on to say that antisemitism has grown around the world, and they felt that in Australia.

He called on the Jewish community around the world to light their candles tonight “for those who were killed”.

Police presence in London being stepped up after Sydney shooting, Met Police confirms
The Met Police says it is stepping up its presence following the attack in Sydney.

It comes after the UK’s Community Security Trust, a group providing security for Jewish schools and community venues, said it is working with authorities to increase protection as the first Hanukkah – also known as Chanukah – candles are lit this evening.

The Met says:

“While there is no information to suggest any link between the attack in Sydney and the threat level in London, this morning we are stepping up our police presence, carrying out additional community patrols and engaging with the Jewish community to understand what more we can do in the coming hours and days.”

The CST condemned the “appalling attack”, and Sky News understands that conversations between the group and police across the UK are ongoing, and contact with the ministers responsible for security is due to take place.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also confirmed that security is being increased for Jewish communities in London.
